BROTHERWOOD OF SAINT VINCENT AND THE GRUMEURS

Brotherhood created by the Fraternity and and Conviviality of the Wine-growers of Santenay, with the blessing of Saint Vincent de Santenay, their patron saint.

Mutual aid associations

In the 19th century the mutual aid associations were created with the goal of helping sick and grieving members. The fraternities -craftsman and wine-growers - mobilised to carry out the work. Support and mutual aid were the keywords of the brotherhood with a Christian inspiration.

Established in 1856 and modified after the decrees of 1864 and 1870, the association of Santenay took the name of "La Fraternelle". On 25 June 1883 it was registered under Number 59 on the List of Associations of the Côte d’Or. It had 151 members including 76 winegrowers, 17 property owners, 6 barrel makers, 2 wine traders, 2 cultivators, and 3 transporters. There were 45 craftsmen: wood-workers, plasterers, shoemakers, masons, roofers, lathe operators, carpenters, gardeners, stone cutters, top sawers, hotel keepers, accountants, transporters, harness makers, painters, road-maintenance workers, horseshoers, butchers, mail carriers and musicians.
Social advancements, the increase in the size of cultivated lands, the generalisation of insurance and social security resulted in the fraternities losing their economic role. Only a few examples of such fraternities have survived until our times.
