The Hospices de Beaune or Hôtel Dieu

Its glazed multi-coloured roofs have made it the symbol of Burgundy.
The Hôtel Dieu, founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin and his wife Guigone de Salins, was designed to provide care and housing for the poor. It welcomed its first patient in 1452. Since then it has continued to look after the elderly, orphans, the sick and the destitute through to the 20th century.
The tour starts with the “Cour Rectangulaire” (Rectangular Court). This gives an unbeatable view of the roof with its glazed tiles. The tour then visits the different rooms in the hospice. The most symbolic and the largest is the Salle des Pôvres (50 m long), containing two rows of curtained beds. Then you will visit the Chapel, the Saint Anne room, Saint Hugues room, Saint Nicolas room, the kitchen, the apothecary and the Saint Louis room.

The Hospices de Beaune house a major work of art, exhibited in an air-conditioned room: the “Last Judgement” polyptych by the Flemish painter Van der Weyden.
