 Chalon sur Saône
|
The principal town of the Saône-et-Loire department and the second town of Burgundy by number of inhabitants, Chalon-sur-Saône is an ideal location, filled with art and history.
Two former natives of the town have contributed to its fame: Nicéphore Nièpce, the inventor of the first photographic process, and Dominique Vivant Denon, the first director of the Louvre Museum.

The Cathedral
A listed Historic Monument since 1903, the Cathedral of Saint Vincent is the former Diocesan Church of Chalon-sur-Saône. Built between 1090 and 1522, it contains influences from Roman art and Gothic art.
Roman era:
- the chapels and southern and northern absidioles
- the floor of the choir and the transept arms
- the arcades of the central nave and the two aisles
Gothic era:
- the apse in the Choir
- the chapter house
- the apse chapel
- the transept crossing’s vault
It is located on the old town’s busiest square. There are many half-timbered houses to be seen. Enjoy a coffee or ice-cream at one of the square’s many terraces while you admire a majestic and perfectly restored cathedral! |

The Nicéphore Nièpce Museum
The unique collections in this museum retrace the history of photography through to contemporary photography. It presents many exhibitions throughout the year.
The Denon Museum
In this museum you will discover local and regional archaeological collections and Fine Arts collections dating from the 16th and 19th centuries.
The Saint Nicolas Rose Garden
What about a leisurely stroll through 26,000 rose bushes?
600 different varieties are exhibited along a 2-km footpath in the centre of the 5-hectare Saint Nicolas leisure centre. |
