Mutual aid associations |
| |
In the 19th century the mutual aid associations were created with the goal of helping sick and
grieving members. The fraternities -craftsman and wine-growers - mobilised to carry out the
work. Support and mutual aid were the keywords of the brotherhood with a Christian
inspiration.
Established in 1856 and modified after the decrees of 1864 and 1870, the association of
Santenay took the name of "La Fraternelle". On 25 June 1883 it was registered under Number
59 on the List of Associations of the Côte d’Or. It had 151 members including 76 winegrowers,
17 property owners, 6 barrel makers, 2 wine traders, 2 cultivators, and 3 transporters.
There were 45 craftsmen: wood-workers, plasterers, shoemakers, masons, roofers, lathe
operators, carpenters, gardeners, stone cutters, top sawers, hotel keepers, accountants,
transporters, harness makers, painters, road-maintenance workers, horseshoers, butchers, mail
carriers and musicians.
Social advancements, the increase in the size of cultivated lands, the generalisation of insurance
and social security resulted in the fraternities losing their economic role. Only a few examples
of such fraternities have survived until our times.

Revival |
| |
In 1938, the most illustrious fraternities of Bachhus: the Confrérie des
Chevaliers du Tastevin, gave back life to these fraternities by creating the
Saint Vincent Tournament.
This ceremony that is both religious and secular associates all the wine-growering
communitites, by placing them in turn under the protection of Saint Vincent.
The fraternity of Santenay then took on the name of Confrérie de Saint Vincent.
Santenay had the honour of receiving the Saint Vincent Tournante for the first time in 1963 and
then in 1989. |

Following the success of the Tournante, the Confrérie de Saint Vincent widened its scope of
activities in 1989. It chose the name: Confrérie de Saint Vincent et des Grumeurs de
Santenay, in the month of November before the festivities of the Wine Sale of the Hospices of
Beaune. The wine-makers wanted to promote their wines, while confirming their link of
solidarity and conviviality, in the spirit of the traditions of Burgundy.
Throughout the various event, the Grumeurs de Santenay gather together the lovers of the art of
living well and always enhance the fame of the Santenay wines.
During the assemblies, the Grand Counsellor dubs new Grumeurs who promise fidelity to Santenay.

Grumage of Santenay and the New Wine Assembly |
| |
|
The Grumages of Santenay and its new wine assembly takes place on the Friday before
the prestigious wine sale of the Hospices of Beaune, that is scheduled for the 3rd
Sunday of November.
Schedule of events :
On Friday afternoon from 2.00 to 6.00 p.m., all the producers of Santenay are invited to present
their last harvest at the village reception hall.
The moment of the inauguration by regional and viticultural personalities, in the presence of
professionals, wine lovers and the general public is the unique occasion to discover the
organoleptic qualities of the year.
Each year, more than 30 wine-growers personally present to the grumage more than 200
samples of the wines of Santenay and Santenay 1er Cru.
It would perhaps be a good idea to go over the etymology of the French verb grumer, "that
which comes from the grume (grape berry)", and which means to taste a young wine when it
still has the original aroma of the fruit.
In the evening, the Grumage dinner is served at the Castle Philippe le Hardi. An ensemble of
hunters horns and a regional folkloric group provide the entertainment.
The ceremony of enthronement ends the evening and the new members embark upon the
mission of carrying the name of Santenay throughout the world. |
